About the position

The Construction Technician at Southwest Gas Corporation is responsible for performing labor and skilled mechanical work related to the installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities. This role involves working independently or as part of a crew, adhering to safety and emergency procedures, and responding to emergencies as needed. The technician will also be involved in various tasks such as excavation, pipe installation, and equipment operation, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform labor and skilled mechanical work related to installation, maintenance, and operation of natural gas facilities.
  • Excavate and backfill trenches, cut and thread pipe, and apply various coatings on steel pipe and fittings.
  • Operate and maintain low pressure control equipment as required.
  • Provide situational-specific work direction during emergency response or SWG TAP applications.
  • Meet and maintain acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work as required.
  • Perform duties in compliance with Company, local, state, and federal regulations, safety and emergency practices and procedures.
  • Analyze and make critical decisions related to incident response management under the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Complete ongoing extensive operator qualification training and maintain required proficiencies.
  • Use and maintain protective safety equipment as required.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and material and complete required documentation.
  • Conduct leakage surveys and operate leakage detection equipment as required.
  • Locate and mark underground facilities using pipe and cable locating equipment.
  • Operate large vehicles and equipment such as crew trucks, backhoes, trenchers, loaders, and boom trucks.
  • Repair and maintain power and pneumatic/hydraulic equipment as required.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance program for all construction-related tools and equipment.
  • Train others as required.
  • Complete written and electronic Company forms and records accurately and timely.
  • Operate computer-based software programs as required.
  • Perform work as required by new technology, including equipment, procedures, and methods.
  • Conduct quality control inspections for gas distribution and transmission work as required by state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of functions relating to the installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction design and as-built drawings.
  • Mechanical and physical aptitude to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to pass all written tests and/or hands-on training or simulations as required for the job classification.
  • Ability to meet all special requirements under State and Federal law.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) processes and requirements.
