The Construction Worker position is a vital role within the Public Works Department, specifically in the Stormwater Management Division. This position is responsible for performing skilled work in construction and repairs, which includes maintaining and repairing various infrastructure elements such as curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and drainage systems. The individual in this role will assist in the maintenance of the stormwater system, ensuring that the city's infrastructure is well-maintained and functional. The work involves removing low-hanging limbs, repairing damage caused by erosion, and maintaining rights-of-way and traffic islands. The Construction Worker will also engage in concrete and asphalt demolition and construction, which requires a high level of skill and attention to detail. The position requires the ability to operate various tools and equipment, including lawn mowing equipment, chainsaws, and backhoes. The Construction Worker will be expected to follow safety guidelines diligently and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed. The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects and work outdoors in various weather conditions. The incumbent will report to the Crew Supervisor, who will provide general instructions and spot-check completed work for compliance with established procedures. This position may be filled at either the Construction Worker I or II level, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining the city's stormwater infrastructure, contributing to the overall effectiveness and safety of public works operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
  • Removes, repairs, and installs curbs and gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Removes and repairs asphalt maintenance projects related to street maintenance and repair.
  • Performs/lead in the construction/rehabilitation of drainage systems: culverts, catch basins, ditches, etc.
  • Operates lawn mowing equipment, chainsaws, weed eaters, pole saws, shovels, and other hand tools.
  • Operates tools and equipment, including skill saw, table saw, miter saw, hammer drill, level, and wrenches; operates backhoes and other light equipment and sewer jet.
  • Cleans open ditches, landscapes, and sows' grass.
  • Repairs and replaces drain covers and basins.
  • Repairs damage caused by erosion.
  • Removes low hanging limbs.
  • Maintains rights-of-way and traffic islands.
  • Transports materials and equipment to work sites.
  • Installs barricades and other traffic control devices.
  • Assists in the collection of loose leaves.
  • Follows safety guidelines.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a Class B CDL driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards.
  • Ability to prepare daily worksheets.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand and power tools.
