About the position

Employees in this position will engage in skilled and semi-skilled trades work, focusing on the construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and restoration of city buildings. This role is crucial in maintaining the integrity and functionality of public facilities, ensuring that they meet the needs of the community and provide a safe environment for all users. As part of the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769, this position is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Employees will be expected to perform a variety of essential functions, including estimating materials and workload for projects, conducting maintenance on city buildings, performing roadway repairs, and restoring plumbing systems. The role also involves general carpentry, installation of doors and hardware, and completing minor renovation projects independently. In addition to the hands-on work, employees will be responsible for developing project proposals and creating cost estimates. The position requires a proactive approach to property maintenance, including inspecting and repairing playground equipment and performing general upkeep tasks. The City of Fort Lauderdale offers a competitive benefits package, including participation in the Florida Retirement System (FRS), which provides both investment and pension options for employees. New hires will automatically be enrolled in FRS, contributing 3% of their salary towards retirement savings. Furthermore, employees may benefit from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which can forgive the remaining balance on student loans after 120 qualifying payments while employed full-time with the City.

Responsibilities

  • Estimates materials needed and workload for projects
  • Performs maintenance on city buildings; performs painting and drywall replacement
  • Performs roadway repairs and maintenance
  • Repairs and restores existing plumbing systems
  • Performs general carpentry and other construction type activities
  • Installs doors, hardware, locks, etc.
  • Develops proposals for projects; creates cost estimates
  • Completes minor renovation projects such as bathrooms without assistance
  • Inspects and repairs playground equipment
  • Performs general property maintenance such as blowing leaves and dumping outside trash
  • Pours concrete and makes repairs to masonry walls
  • Performs related work as required or directed by lead worker or supervisor

Requirements

  • High School Degree or equivalency
  • At least three (3) years of construction experience
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida Driver's License within 30 days of hire

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute for one year of required experience or education
