About the position

As a Consulting Engineer at kW Mission Critical Engineering, a member of WSP USA, you will play a pivotal role in designing complex cooling and HVAC systems tailored for mission-critical environments such as data centers. This position is based in our Herndon, VA office, where you will be responsible for the development and implementation of innovative mechanical engineering solutions. Your work will involve designing air distribution systems, chiller plants, and alternative energy solutions, ensuring that all designs meet the highest standards of performance and sustainability. In this role, you will collect, compile, and analyze data from various sources including physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, and technical drawings. You will conduct thorough inspections and research of proposed and existing site conditions to ensure compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. Your responsibilities will also include performing cooling and heating load calculations, designing hydronic systems, and selecting major equipment for projects. You will work closely under the supervision of senior engineers, participating in multi-discipline project teams to develop detailed drawing and specification documents for architects, contractors, and building owners. Your ability to collaborate and coordinate with internal project teams and external vendors will be crucial to the success of each project. Additionally, you will attend client meetings to discuss project progress and requirements, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned and informed throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design complex cooling and HVAC systems including air distribution systems and chiller plants.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions and mechanical systems.
  • Incorporate advanced technology and modeling techniques into design requirements and load calculations.
  • Work under the supervision of senior engineers on various assignments.
  • Develop drawing and specification documents for issuance to architects, contractors, and building owners.
  • Attend client meetings to discuss project requirements and progress.
  • Collaborate with internal project teams and external equipment vendors.
  • Perform cooling/heating load calculations and design hydronic systems.
  • Schedule and select major equipment for projects.
  • Perform construction administration tasks with oversight from experienced staff.
  • Survey and evaluate existing conditions with guidance from senior staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a focus on mechanical building systems.
  • 1-3 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior mechanical design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit software.
  • Familiarity with building, mechanical, and energy codes.
  • Interest in innovative design, particularly in renewable energies and sustainable buildings.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices related to project work.
  • Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Effective self-leadership and attention to detail in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and manage multiple priorities.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing and office automation tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for technical analysis and conclusions.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with company policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • PE License or ability to obtain PE is preferable.
  • Previous building design or construction internship experience.
