This role is for a Consultant Sales Engineer in Field Systems Engineering, focusing on Optical network solutions. The position requires a strong understanding of Optical DWDM Solutions and customer applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for customer network designs, quotes, presentations, and written proposals, as well as assisting customers with technical tasks such as developing test plans, conducting lab testing, performing demos, and managing software upgrades. The role demands the ability to gather and understand solution requirements, collaborate with internal teams to develop strategies, and present technology options to customers. As a customer-facing senior technical Sales Engineer representative, the individual will consult with customers to perform network and applications engineering for multiple Ciena products. This includes engineering Ciena solutions for advanced customer applications across Metro and Core networks, managing customer requests, and coordinating technical sales activities. The role also involves preparing and delivering presentations, designs, quotes, and RFX responses, providing product and technical expertise to support sales efforts, and assisting in the assessment of potential product features. The Consultant Sales Engineer will lead discussions on network modernization with customers who have legacy infrastructure and assist Account Management with sales forecasts. The position requires independent decision-making on routine technical activities in accordance with company policies and procedures, along with other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with customers to perform network and applications engineering for multiple Ciena products
  • Engineer Ciena solutions for advanced customer applications across Metro and Core networks
  • Manage customer requests and help coordinate technical sales activities
  • Consult in the preparation and delivery of presentations, designs, quotes, and RFX responses
  • Provide product and technical expertise to support sales efforts of Ciena products
  • Prepare complex design and applications presentations
  • Assist in assessment of potential product features, providing input on prioritization
  • Assist and lead network modernization discussions with customers with legacy infrastructure
  • Assist Account Management with sales forecasts
  • Assist in product acceptance test planning, coordination, and test result reporting
  • Make independent decisions on routine technical activities in accordance with company policy and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of fiber optic Coherent DWDM transmission systems (SONET/SDH, OTN, Amps, ROADMs)
  • Working technical knowledge of Data Networking, Carrier Ethernet, IP/MPLS, IGP/BGP routing, Segment Routing, and other Adaptive IP network architectures
  • Familiarity with SDN, network virtualization as well as Public, Private and Edge cloud
  • Familiarity with automation, analytics, and AI usage in networking operations
  • Familiarity with test equipment (traffic generators, OSAs, OTDR, power meters, etc)
  • Strong PC and Unix skills including general knowledge of computers, MS Office applications and Unix operating environment
  • Software programming and scripting is a plus
  • Construction of product feature/price analysis tools
  • Strategy development and problem-solving skills
  • Project management, time management, and organizational skills due to dynamic nature of activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communications as well as excellent presentation skills
  • Working knowledge for equipment hands-on capabilities configuring/testing/deploying optical networking platforms, services, and complex optical networks
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision
