About the position

The Consumer Assistance Specialist position involves administrative work focused on the receipt, analysis, and resolution of consumer complaints, as well as reviewing insurance company form filings for compliance with Maine laws. The role requires investigating complaints, educating the public about their rights under insurance law, and performing various clerical tasks to support the Bureau's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Investigating complaints and handling inquiries from the public, agents, and insurance companies to enforce compliance with Maine laws.
  • Reviewing life and health insurance contracts and form filings for regulatory compliance.
  • Educating the public about their rights under insurance law during inquiries and outreach events.
  • Coordinating outreach events, including registration and logistics, and preparing materials for these events.
  • Performing clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and assigning workloads to staff.

Requirements

  • A four-year combination of education and experience in an investigative or public relations role involving consumer complaints or assistance.
  • Knowledge of applicable agency laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and write clearly.
  • Ability to investigate disputes and make sound recommendations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in billing, claims, or insurance determination and authorization.
  • Knowledge of the health care system and employee benefits.
  • Experience interpreting contracts and laws.
