About the position

The Consumer Horticulture and State Master Gardener Program Coordinator at Clemson University is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational outreach of the university's Extension services. This position is classified as an Open Rank Extension Position, which may fall under various classifications depending on the candidate's education and experience. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with county and state staff to plan, teach, and evaluate Extension educational programs focused on consumer horticulture. Additionally, the coordinator will oversee the statewide aspects of the South Carolina Master Gardener Volunteer (SCMGV) Program, which includes training Extension agents, volunteers, and other stakeholders on various consumer horticulture topics. The role involves a significant amount of collaboration with subject matter experts, agents, and volunteers to develop and deliver innovative consumer horticulture programming that addresses the emerging needs of South Carolina residents. The coordinator will be responsible for managing and evaluating the SCMGV program at the statewide level, ensuring that local Master Gardener coordinators, agents, and program assistants receive the necessary training and support. The position also requires the production and dissemination of scholarly outputs, such as publications and presentations, to establish the coordinator as a content expert in the field. In addition to program development, the coordinator will engage in resource development and management to support Extension educational programming. This includes seeking funding through grants, contracts, and other means to ensure the sustainability of the programs. The coordinator will also participate in professional development opportunities and communicate effectively with Extension and program administrators to enhance program delivery and impact.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with subject experts, agents, and volunteers to coordinate and deliver new consumer horticulture programming and resources.
  • Manage and evaluate the South Carolina Master Gardener Volunteer program at the statewide level.
  • Provide training and support to local Master Gardener coordinators, agents, and program assistants.
  • Produce and disseminate scholarly outputs and products that support consumer horticulture and the SCMGV program.
  • Serve as a resource to Extension agents and clientele within South Carolina.
  • Collaborate with horticulture team members and other Extension program teams in program development and delivery.
  • Responsible for program resource development and management.
  • Attend program-specific, office, and Extension team meetings and trainings as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in horticulture or a closely related field.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in educational program delivery, volunteer management, or similar (for UK41 classification).
  • Five years of demonstrated experience in educational program delivery, volunteer management, or similar (for UK39 and UK65 classifications).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective program evaluation and resource development success in support of programming efforts (for UK39 and UK65 classifications).
  • Administrative/supervisory experience and demonstrated skills in team leadership and problem solving (for UK65 classification).

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctoral / Professional Degree in horticulture or closely related field.
  • Direct experience in Extension program development and evaluation.
