About the position

The Consumer Loan Support Specialist plays a crucial role in advocating for members by assessing their lending needs and providing timely processing for membership and consumer lending requests. This position involves accepting and servicing loan files, assisting with loan applications, quoting interest rates, and ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate for underwriting purposes. The specialist acts as a support function within the Lending Department, ensuring effective communication and problem-solving for loan applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Gather background information on loan applicants by interviewing them and obtaining credit bureau reports.
  • Assist members in product assessment and completion of loan applications by obtaining necessary documentation.
  • Quote interest rates to loan applicants.
  • Review credit bureau reports, verify debts, and calculate various debt ratios.
  • Resolve loan application problems and assist applicants with credit report issues.
  • Order and prepare necessary documents such as credit reports and collateral valuations.
  • Verify employment, salary, assets, and liabilities of applicants.
  • Provide all applicable loan and membership disclosures to members.
  • Act as a liaison between third-party vendors, members, and the credit union regarding loan status.
  • Communicate with members regarding application denials and assist with future lending needs.

Requirements

  • Experience in consumer lending and a basic understanding of the financial or banking industry.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and general office equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks accurately.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to obtain Certified Financial Counselor status.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year of experience in consumer loan processing (preferred).
  • 1 year of customer service experience (preferred).
