About the position

The Consumer Marketing Strategy Director is a pivotal role responsible for building and leading strategic plans aimed at driving subscriber acquisition, increasing engagement, and mitigating churn for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Green Bay Press-Gazette. This position requires a keen understanding of the market dynamics and the ability to collaborate effectively with news teams to develop and execute comprehensive marketing plans. The successful candidate will work closely with various teams to implement these plans and communicate results to both news and corporate teams. This role serves as the head of subscription sales and engagement for the two publications, reporting directly to the consumer subscription and revenue team, while also maintaining a strong connection to the local General Manager. The position demands a presence in the Milwaukee office for at least 60% of the time, or as directed by the key manager. The base salary for this role ranges from $105,000 to $120,000, reflecting the importance of the position in driving revenue and engagement. The Director will be responsible for developing strategic plans that include an audience roadmap to enhance revenue, launching marketing programs that support newsroom initiatives, and ensuring that all marketing efforts align with brand guidelines. Additionally, the Director will oversee social media advertising campaigns, manage in-app campaigns, and communicate results to key stakeholders, all while responding to changing market trends and competitive landscapes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead strategic plans to drive subscriber acquisition and increase engagement.
  • Oversee consumer sales and engagement results for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
  • Develop sales and engagement strategic plans including the audience roadmap to drive revenue.
  • Collaborate with news teams to incorporate high-performing and trending content into marketing plans.
  • Launch marketing programs to support newsroom initiatives that drive subscription growth, including newsletters, SMS campaigns, social media platforms, and native apps.
  • Plan, manage, and monitor social media ads to drive subscription sales or improve engagement of existing subscribers.
  • Ensure website and ads are functioning as expected for both print and digital subscriptions.
  • Create and launch in-app campaigns to drive subscriptions or improve engagement.
  • Communicate results with key stakeholders and respond to changing trends internally and externally.
  • Understand the competitive landscape in the market and factors impacting growth.
  • Adhere to all pricing strategies as defined by Local Revenue and Planning.
  • Connect with social, search, and email teams to stay abreast of trends and best practices.
  • Lead and be present at local events to drive subscriptions, top-of-funnel leads, and brand awareness.
  • Participate proactively in developing and maintaining standards, tools, and best practices with the Enterprise Team.
  • Work with marketing operations to ensure timely execution of sales efforts such as email communication and onsite ads.
  • Collaborate with the analytics team to ensure proper tracking of results and provide explanations as needed.
  • Maintain highlights documentation to understand trends including YOY changes and anomalies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years of sales and marketing experience.
  • 2+ years of subscription sales experience.
  • Proven track record of evaluating, identifying, and executing strategic opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • History of delivering results and implementing change.
