About the position

Gannett Co., Inc. is seeking a Senior Manager of Content for the El Paso Times, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK. This position is designed for a dynamic, digitally focused innovator who will lead and supervise a news reporting team. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving breaking news online and will play a crucial role in leading the news operation. The ideal candidate will have a passion for coaching and developing journalists, helping them to reveal important news and create stories with context and clarity. This role emphasizes the importance of growing the digital audience through engaging content and effective use of social media, SEO, and other tactics. The Senior Manager will be hands-on, focusing on coaching staff and using metrics and audience research to guide coverage decisions. This position requires a mentor who can help reporters improve their newsgathering and writing skills while cultivating deep sourcing and taking on increasingly sophisticated work. The candidate must also be able to post updates, participate in team reporting projects, and assist newsrooms in creating relevant coverage that increases reach and drives loyalty, encouraging more readers to subscribe. The role demands a problem solver who is well-organized, can work independently, and exercises solid news judgment. Collaboration and teamwork skills are essential, as this editor will work closely with a planning desk for both print and digital content and a digital optimization team. The position is ideal for someone interested in becoming the top editor, with a focus on various storytelling approaches, from Instagram stories to video, and launching new verticals tailored to specific audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Help the staff hone skills in a wide range of storytelling: from real-time digital updates to narrative storytelling, employing alternative story forms and multimedia.
  • Use metrics and analytics to determine how to best reach and grow the audience.
  • Increase digital audience and engagement and grow digital subscriptions.
  • Be a teacher, not just an editor. After all, everyone needs a coach.
  • Be courageous about experimentation.
  • Be a team player who likes to collaborate with coworkers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years of experience in journalism writing, editing or management roles and demonstration of strong editing skills.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.

Benefits

  • Annualized base salary ranging between $59,400 and $140,300, with variable compensation based on role and applicable skills and experience.
