About the position

The Content Writer position at United University Professions (UUP) involves creating engaging written content for the union's publications and digital platforms. This entry-level role requires strong writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. The position offers the flexibility of remote work for up to two days a week and involves covering events and producing content that supports UUP's mission and advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities

• Writing bylined stories and other assignments for UUP's membership magazines, The Voice and The Echo.
• Interviewing UUP members at campuses across the state for news stories, feature stories, or profiles.
• Contributing written items for UUP's website and a weekly electronic newsletter.
• Covering live events, including rallies, marches, union events, press conferences, and UUP's Delegate Assembly.
• Taking photos and/or video and writing stories from live events.
• Covering live and/or virtual events and meetings with lawmakers to advocate for SUNY in the state budget process.
• Assisting with proofreading and editing newsletters, magazines, news releases, and reports by UUP officers.
• Contributing photos for UUP's social media channels.
• Writing, editing, and proofreading content for marketing emails and print pieces.
• Organizing and managing multiple priorities and working under tight deadlines.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
• Excellent writing and proofreading skills, including a working knowledge of AP style.
• Attention to detail and experience working in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work independently as well as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel, particularly during New York's legislative session.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop.
• Experience using a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera and shooting video is a plus.
• Knowledge of virtual programs such as Zoom, GoToMeeting, and Microsoft Teams is required.

Nice-to-haves

• Prior experience as a newspaper reporter or television news reporter (two years or more) is a plus.
• Prior social media experience (writing items for posting, taking and posting photos/videos, etc.) is a plus.
• Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro (or other video editing software) is a plus.
