About the position

The New York State Senate is seeking a dedicated and proactive Content Writer to join the Senate Services Department. This role is essential for enriching the content provided to members and the public, ensuring that the information is engaging, informative, and aligned with the Senate's communication goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in writing, with proven experience in content creation, copywriting, and editing. The Content Writer will be responsible for conducting thorough research on industry-related topics, generating innovative ideas for new content types, and proofreading articles before they are published. Familiarity with producing online content and a keen eye for detail are crucial for success in this position. In this dynamic role, the Content Writer will develop effective branding, marketing, and public outreach content, as well as create collateral materials that align with the overarching communication goals of the Content Management System (CMS). The candidate will utilize communications consulting, research, interviews, journalistic skills, and storytelling to advance the goals and objectives of the CMS. Standardizing messaging across various platforms to promote a unified communications approach is a key responsibility. The Content Writer will also be tasked with ensuring consistency in style, fonts, images, and tone across all written materials. The position is full-time, based in Albany, New York, with a workweek from Monday to Friday. The salary range for this position is between $45,000 and $60,000, commensurate with experience and education. Responsibilities

  • Research industry-related topics using online sources, interviews, and studies.
  • Write clear and engaging content to promote members, their districts, and state resources.
  • Proofread and edit posts before publication to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Submit work to editors for input and approval.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments and stakeholders to illustrate materials effectively.
  • Ensure consistency in style, fonts, images, and tone across all content.
  • Update website content as needed to keep information current.

Requirements

  • Proven work experience as a Content Writer, Copywriter, or similar role.
  • Portfolio of published articles or written work.
  • Experience conducting research using multiple sources.
  • Familiarity with web publications and digital communications techniques, including social media.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, English, journalism, or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years of professional writing experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload to meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail while retaining the ability to see the bigger picture.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to clearly communicate matters to all levels of management.
  • Experience developing and delivering compelling, informative, and well-written prose.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with digital communications techniques, including social media is desired.
  • Bilingual preferred but not required.
