About the position

The Continuous Cooker Operator - Level 1 position is a critical role within the rendering processing environment, requiring a comprehensive understanding of various equipment and processes. The operator will be responsible for the start-up and shut-down procedures of all boilers, cookers, and associated processing equipment, ensuring that operations are conducted efficiently and safely. This role demands adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to produce safe and high-quality final products. The operator will also be tasked with troubleshooting and resolving operational issues, maintaining a clean work environment, and performing critical control point monitoring. As a team lead, the operator will guide and direct other team members, ensuring effective communication and coordination during shift changes. In addition to operating the Dupps 200u Super cooker and Bird 24x38 centrifuge, the operator will learn to manage the High-Pressure Condensate Return (HPCR) system and the Pressor operation. The role requires the ability to dig out jams in the conveyance systems and to prepare daily samples for laboratory testing. The operator must report any equipment failures or safety concerns promptly to the Shift Supervisor or Plant Manager. The position involves working 12-hour shifts, with flexibility required to cover for absent team members. Overall, the Continuous Cooker Operator plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the rendering plant and the production of quality products.

Responsibilities

  • Start up and shut down procedures for all boilers, cookers, and processing equipment.
  • Perform start up and shut down of Offal Building and all associated equipment.
  • Operate the Dupps 200u Super cooker, including startup/shutdown procedures and understanding the feed system, temperature control, and discharge system.
  • Maintain a good understanding of the operation of the High-Pressure Condensate Return (HPCR) system.
  • Operate a Bird 24x38 centrifuge, including setting up feed levels and cleaning.
  • Learn and operate the Pressor, adjusting the feed rate to prevent wet or greasy material.
  • Operate all equipment in the Crax side of the Grinding Room.
  • Dig out jams or bridges of material within the raw or finished product conveyance systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues within the processing systems.
  • Perform Critical Control Point Monitoring and complete required documentation.
  • Prepare daily samples of products for outside laboratory testing.
  • Conduct in-house testing of Feather Meal and Chicken Fat.
  • Direct Drivers & Raw Receiving operators on raw material dumping schedule.
  • Ensure solid communication exchange at each shift change.
  • Report equipment failures, foreign matter in raw materials, spills, and other concerns to the Shift Supervisor or Plant Manager.
  • Maintain a clean environment, cleaning up spillages immediately and ensuring cleanliness prior to shift change.
  • Dry clean the Grinding Room and hot hi-pressure wash the main processing area and equipment as needed.
  • Perform Packed Tower and Air Scrubber checks, possessing knowledge of their operations.
  • Conduct daily Boiler checks and troubleshoot minor issues as needed.
  • Learn Feather Processing and cover during lunch breaks and absenteeism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor, Plant Manager, or V.P. of Rendering Operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating a cooker in a rendering environment.
  • High school diploma or GED; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English to read, interpret, and document process procedures and daily inspections.
  • Valid state issued driver's license.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to operate a skid loader, Front-end Loader, and Backhoe.
  • Ability to use a Hi-Pressure Washer.
  • Ability to pass Forklift Certification.
  • Must complete mandatory training including Fire Safety, First Aid/CPR/AED, Forklift (every 3 years), LOTO/PPE/Dust/Hazard Comm./Confined Space, Hearing, Food Safety, and other assigned training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Feather Processing operations.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in a manufacturing environment.
