About the position

The Theatre of Hearts/Youth First (TOHYF) is seeking Professional Working Artists to serve as Contract Artist Mentors in the disciplines of Visual Arts, specifically multimedia, photography, and videography. This role involves mentoring youth through our Youth First Artist-In-Residence workshops, which are conducted in various settings including Juvenile Detention Centers, schools, and community sites. The workshops are designed to be engaging and educational, typically lasting between 1-2 hours and held once or twice a week over a period of 13-15 weeks. Each residency culminates in a Work-in-Progress presentation, showcasing the skills and creativity of the participating youth. As a Contract Artist Mentor, you will be responsible for creating a supportive and inspiring environment for underserved youth, helping them to express themselves through the arts. The workshops are custom-designed and standards-based, aligning with the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) and Common Core State Standards. Candidates who are bilingual and have previous teaching experience will be highly regarded, as these skills will enhance the learning experience for the youth involved. All artists must provide their own vehicle, possess a valid driver's license, and submit proof of a negative TB test. Additionally, full vaccination against COVID-19 is required, and candidates must pass a background check conducted by an agency designated by TOHYF. The pay for this position ranges from $55.00 to $66.00 per hour, depending on the specifics of the contract. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter, a current professional resume or CV, links to their professional website, and a sample lesson plan if available. For those specializing in Dance, Music, or Theatre, video reels or links to previous work should also be included. The mission of the TOHYF Artist-In-Residence Program is to prevent and intervene in youth violence by engaging underserved, low-income youth and their families in high-quality, multidisciplinary arts educational workshops. Since its inception in 1992, TOHYF has successfully provided over 102,500 youth with opportunities for self-expression and skill development through the arts. This position not only allows artists to share their expertise but also to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people in the community.
