About the position

The Contract Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for underwriting first and second mortgages, ensuring compliance with guidelines and regulations. This role involves assessing credit, collateral, income, and assets to make informed lending decisions. The underwriter will work independently while also providing support to junior underwriters and collaborating with management to improve processes.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite mortgage loan files in compliance with guidelines and regulations.
• Assess risks associated with first mortgages and self-employment income.
• Evaluate financial documents to determine loan eligibility and repayment capacity.
• Monitor the mortgage pipeline to expedite the mortgage process.
• Support management with audit preparation and HMDA reporting.
• Provide guidance to junior underwriters and share best practices.
• Proactively seek process improvements to streamline operations.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere through effective communication.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of seven years of comprehensive mortgage underwriting experience required.
• Ability to assess risks associated with first mortgages and self-employment income.
• Experience reviewing financial documents including tax returns and credit reports.
• Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong decision-making and time management skills.
• Detailed knowledge of secondary market guidelines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with Encompass loan origination systems.
