About the position

The position is responsible for overseeing the safe and reliable operation of a power plant, providing work direction to employees on the same shift, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The role involves coordinating daily operations, facilitating safety meetings, and making real-time decisions during critical situations. The individual will also mentor and train staff, manage contractor activities, and communicate with dispatchers to meet system needs.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure assigned work within the plant results in safe and reliable operation.
  • Facilitate and coordinate Shift Safety meetings / Job Briefings for all personnel on the same shift.
  • Promote and ensure a safe work environment, including use of Human Performance tools.
  • Provide work direction in regard to daily operations and maintenance activities for employees assigned to the same shift.
  • Work with Team Leaders, Planner Schedulers, and Engineers to develop work packages for shift employees.
  • Make real-time decisions regarding the operation of equipment in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner.
  • Operate boiler, turbine, and generator manually during emergencies.
  • Perform startup and shutdown functions of boiler, turbine, generator, and associated equipment as required.
  • Ensure adequate shift coverage through contact of other qualified personnel during unplanned absences after hours.
  • Provide leadership within the workgroup including mentoring and training others.
  • Report on training activities of employees assigned to the same shift to Team Leaders.
  • Oversee contractors, particularly during after-hours operations/maintenance.
  • Provide 'fill-in' coverage for Operations Team Lead when needed.
  • Ensure units are operated in compliance with all regulatory requirements including OSHA, Environmental, NERC/CIP, etc.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the Boiler, Turbine, Generator and associated areas.
  • Communicate in real-time with the Energy Management Organization Dispatchers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of power plant experience, preferably in operations.
  • Strong knowledge of technology and use of computer.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take and understand directives and complete tasks.
  • Leadership skills and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to lead multiple activities and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and dependable team player.
  • Ability to recognize hazards in the workplace and mitigate them.
  • Ability to maintain and care for Company equipment properly and safeguard assets.
  • Demonstrated acceptance of a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2-year Process Technology Degree
  • 10 years of power plant operations experience.
  • Ability to recognize opportunities for process improvement and enact change.
  • Ability to lead and participate in problem-solving teams as required.
  • Operations Technician progression level of knowledge, skills, and ability.
