About the position

The Controller at The Northbridge Companies is a senior-level executive role that reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This position is pivotal in overseeing all financial operations within the organization, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with financial regulations and standards. The Controller will provide strategic financial guidance to senior management, focusing on cash management, implementing financial controls, and preparing essential financial documents such as financial statements, investor reports, and ensuring loan compliance. Additionally, the role encompasses payroll and accounts payable management, making it crucial for the financial health of the organization. In terms of financial management, the Controller will manage all accounting operations, including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and the general ledger. This includes preparing and publishing timely monthly financial statements and coordinating the preparation of regulatory reporting. The Controller will also support budget and forecasting activities, ensuring that financial planning aligns with the organization's strategic goals. The role requires a strong emphasis on financial planning and analysis, where the Controller will analyze and present financial reports accurately and in a timely manner. Clear communication of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to senior leadership is essential, as is the preparation of investor communications and reporting. The Controller will monitor progress and changes in financial performance and keep senior leadership informed of any significant developments. In terms of auditing and compliance, the Controller will ensure quality control over financial transactions and reporting, manage compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements, and oversee the coordination of independent auditors. The position also involves operations management, where the Controller will develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets and provide leadership to the accounts receivable and accounts payable departments. Team leadership is another critical aspect of this role. The Controller will be responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating department staff, supporting their development, and managing workload distribution. A supportive and collaborative approach to mentoring and developing staff is essential for fostering a productive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all accounting operations including Payroll, A/R, A/P, and GL.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting.
  • Support budget and forecasting activities.
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare investor communications and reporting.
  • Monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership informed.
  • Assist in the coordination and preparation of the budget and financial forecasts.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Oversee the coordination and activities of independent auditors.
  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
  • Provide leadership and support to accounts receivable and accounts payable departments.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate department staff.
  • Support staff development and manage workload distribution.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance required, MA preferred.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of for-profit accounting experience.
  • Proven experience as a controller or similar role, with a strong background in fiscal management and accounting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbally) with residents, families, staff, and the public.
  • Compassion for and desire to work with the elderly.
  • Must meet all State health requirements.
  • Proficient knowledge in accounting software programs, GAAP, preparation of financial statements, and financial reports.
