About the position

Alpena Marc, LLC is seeking an experienced accounting professional to join their team as a full-time Controller. This role is ideal for individuals who appreciate a family-oriented business environment and are looking to escape the rigidity often found in corporate cultures. The Controller will play a crucial role in guiding the business through its growth phase by implementing sound accounting and financial practices. This position offers a hands-on approach within a friendly business atmosphere, allowing the Controller to drive their work schedule based on the successful completion of assigned duties. As an advisor to the President, the Controller will provide insights on all financial matters and oversee the accounting staff's duties. The role involves managing a diverse portfolio of business entities, including manufacturing, real estate, and hospitality, all within a family business office setting. The Controller will oversee a team of two accounting professionals and will interact closely with the General Manager and Inventory Control Manager. The position also supports a hybrid work schedule, emphasizing flexibility and work-life balance. The Controller will be responsible for preparing financial statements for various entities, managing the budget process, overseeing cash management, and coordinating with external auditors. Additionally, the role includes assessing and improving accounting and internal control systems, developing business performance metrics, and ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting. The Controller will also manage banking relations and human resources functions, including employee relations and benefits administration, while maintaining productive relationships both inside and outside the organization.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and prepare financial statements for multiple real estate, manufacturing, hospitality, and development entities.
• Manage the budget process on a quarterly and annual basis.
• Oversight of cash management and ongoing cash flows and projections.
• Plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting operational functions, including general journal entries and managing P/L statements.
• Coordinate the activities of external auditors and external vendor relationships.
• Manage all hands-on accounting and controller functions on behalf of a privately held family-owned growing group of businesses.
• Assess and evaluate accounting and internal control systems and provide recommendations for processes and improvements.
• Develop and monitor business performance metrics and produce ongoing reports for management review.
• Oversee regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance.
• Secure financing for all capital expenditures.
• Manage banking relations and similar business relationships.
• Manage and coordinate company human resources functions, including employee relations, recruitment, and benefits administration.
• Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or organization.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business with an accounting or finance focus.
• 5+ years of successful progressive accounting experience.
• Previous experience as a Controller preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, procedures, and legislation.
• Hands-on experience with general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions.
• Ability to manage multiple different business portfolios.
• Good knowledge of accounting software; prior experience using QuickBooks is a plus.
• Attention to detail.
