About the position

The Controller at the American Gem Society will oversee the financial operations of the organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, budget management, and regulatory compliance. This role involves supervising accounting staff, managing daily accounting functions, and supporting the CFO in optimizing the organization's financial performance, particularly in the context of a 501(c)(6) entity. The Controller will play a key role in executing strategic goals and participating in strategic planning to advance the organization's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and revenue recognition.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and assist with quarterly and year-end Board of Directors reporting.
  • Perform monthly bank and investment reconciliations, ensuring timely reporting and accurate account balances.
  • Prepare and compile financial information for the annual financial audit and support external auditors.
  • Prepare documentation for federal tax returns and coordinate with external tax preparers, ensuring compliance with 501(c)(6) regulations.
  • Support the CFO in developing annual budgets, financial forecasts, and long-term financial plans.
  • Perform financial analysis and provide insights to support organizational decisions and improve financial performance.
  • Monitor cash flow, banking activities, and financial investments, making recommendations for optimization.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff, fostering a team culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal financial controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Actively participate in strategic planning sessions and contribute to the development of financial strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license; active license preferred.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years in public accounting.
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations, particularly with 501(c)(6) entities, is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools (such as GP MS Dynamics, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or equivalent).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in financial modeling and budgeting for nonprofit organizations.
  • Familiarity with GAAP and financial reporting standards.
