About the position

The Controller II position at Tyson Foods, Inc. in Claremont, North Carolina, is a critical role within the Prepared Foods business unit. This position is responsible for overseeing the financial planning, analysis, and reporting functions of the plant-manufacturing unit. The individual in this role will manage the plant accounting staff, ensuring that local accounting functions, including production accounting and payroll, are performed accurately and efficiently. The Controller II will also be tasked with preparing the weekly forecast of plant operating variances, setting policies, establishing guidelines, and leading the budgeting process. A strong collaboration with plant operations is essential to drive continuous improvement activities aimed at reducing the total cost of operations. In addition to managing cost accounting and financial analysis systems, the Controller II will ensure the accuracy of product costs, production costs, and manufacturing variances. This role will provide direction for both internal and external financial reporting and forecasting efforts, supervising the reporting and analysis of plant performance, production reporting, and inventory functions. The Controller II will also support new product development and cost reduction initiatives through detailed financial analysis and cost estimates. The position requires maintaining and developing business relationships with various departments, including headquarters personnel, maintenance, operations, and engineering. The Controller II will provide credible financial analysis to support plant operations and will be involved in supporting LEAN and Safety initiatives as appropriate. Furthermore, the role includes leading the preparation of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), Long Range Plan (LRP), and other performance projections, as well as developing and implementing key controls for SOX compliance. The Controller II will coordinate audits of company accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Direct activities related to maintaining cost accounting and financial analysis systems.
  • Ensure accuracy in product costs, production costs, and manufacturing variances.
  • Oversee formal and informal financial accounting and payroll systems, including payroll administration and internal controls.
  • Provide direction for internal and external financial reporting and forecasting efforts.
  • Supervise reporting and analysis of plant performance, production reporting, and inventory functions.
  • Support new product development and cost reduction efforts through financial analysis and cost estimates.
  • Maintain and develop business relationships with various departments including headquarters personnel, maintenance, operations, and engineering.
  • Provide credible and thorough financial analysis to support plant operations.
  • Support LEAN and Safety initiatives as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; CMA, MBA and/or CPA would be a plus.
  • 6+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment with an understanding of standard cost and variance reporting preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong PC skills (SAP, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of GAAP, Cost Accounting, Fixed Assets, General Ledger Accounting, Payroll, and SOX.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of procurement, production, and finished good delivery, and how they impact profitability.
  • Requires knowledge of cost accounting practices and theories.
  • Strong leadership skills of team members; critical thinking skills.
