About the position

The Controller position at the Municipality of Anchorage is an executive role that operates under the direction of the Chief Fiscal Officer. This position is responsible for supervising the Controller Division personnel and managing the maintenance of all Municipal accounting records. The Controller will prepare, review, and approve annual financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations. Additionally, the role involves coordinating annual independent financial audits and preparing responses to any audit findings, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the Municipal financial system. In this role, the Controller will also identify, recommend, and develop necessary changes or enhancements to the Municipal Financial Information System, ensuring that the system meets the evolving needs of the Municipality. The Controller will attend management meetings and respond to inquiries from constituents and various municipal departments, providing essential financial insights and support. Furthermore, the Controller will be tasked with completing special projects and preparing reports as necessary, contributing to the overall financial strategy and operations of the Municipality. This position is open to the general public and current Municipal employees, and it requires a valid State of Alaska Driver's License at the time of hire. The Controller serves at the pleasure of the Mayor and is not affiliated with any union. The working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, located at 632 W 6th Ave, Anchorage, AK.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Controller Division personnel and manage the maintenance of all Municipal accounting records.
  • Prepare, review, and approve annual financial reports.
  • Coordinate annual independent financial audits and prepare responses to audit findings.
  • Identify, recommend, and develop data processing system changes/enhancements for the Municipal Financial Information System.
  • Attend management meetings and respond to constituent and municipal department inquiries.
  • Complete special projects and prepare reports as necessary.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or similar discipline and ten (10) years of professional accounting experience, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or similar discipline and eight (8) years of professional accounting experience, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR Master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or similar discipline and six (6) years of professional accounting experience, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid State of Alaska Driver's License at time of hire.
  • Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or other similar certification within 18 months of hire.
