About The Position

The Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change. As one of the world's largest science centers, we engage nearly five million people a year. The position involves ensuring accurate management of restricted funds, overseeing budgets, managing endowment and investment funds, coordinating audits, and developing staff within the accounting department. The role also includes collaboration with the Advancement Division and improving business practices related to financial efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in financial management and accounting.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local regulations regarding restricted funds.
  • Experience in budget management and financial projections.
  • Ability to oversee audits and maintain compliance.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in staff development and management.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the accounting for restricted funds to guarantee precise recording and reporting.
  • Monitor the allocation and expenditure to ensure adherence to donor intent and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serve as a resource for grant proposals, spending matters, and federal grant regulations.
  • Manage budgets for restricted funds, ensuring they align with donor intents and organizational goals.
  • Coordinate the annual budget process, collaborating with the CFO and Controller.
  • Conduct financial projections and variance analysis for restricted funds.
  • Oversee the management of the Museum's endowment and investment funds.
  • Monitor investment performance to ensure alignment with the Museum's investment policies.
  • Coordinate the annual audit process to ensure accurate and timely completion of financial statements.
  • Maintain documentation and records to support audit requirements and donor compliance.
  • Hire, manage, cross-train, and develop staff in the accounting department.
  • Oversee the preparation of the federal Indirect Cost Rate proposal.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement Division on restricted contribution recognition and compliance.
  • Provide financial insights and support to the Advancement Division for donor communications.
  • Identify and implement improvements that enhance overall Museum operating and financial efficiencies.
  • Develop and document policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard restricted funds.
