About the position

Saint Joseph Academy, the only all-girls Catholic High School in Cleveland, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Controller. This role is pivotal in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Finance Office, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. The Controller will manage student billing and coordinate the annual external audit, playing a crucial role in the financial health of the Academy. The position requires a commitment to the Catholic education of young women, aligning with the values of the Congregation of St. Joseph, which emphasizes academic excellence and compassionate leadership. The Controller will maintain a strong system of internal controls over financial assets, ensuring that all financial transactions are conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures. This includes monthly account reconciliation, preparation of general journal entries, and the generation of monthly financial statements. The Controller will also be responsible for preparing and distributing monthly financial reports for all departments, providing essential insights into the Academy's financial performance. In addition to financial reporting, the Controller will supervise the student billing cycle, which includes managing tuition enrollment agreements, monitoring student balances, and following up on delinquent accounts. The role also involves assisting the Vice President of Finance and Administration in administering the Academy's scholarship and tuition assistance program, as well as overseeing all aspects of the State of Ohio Scholarship Programs. The Controller will supervise finance office staff responsible for cash receipts, disbursements, purchasing, and payroll cycles, ensuring that all financial operations run smoothly. Furthermore, the Controller will assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget and provide general support to various departments, including Advancement, Guidance, College Counseling, and Admissions, as it relates to student financial issues. Maintaining relationships with banks and credit unions is also a key responsibility, along with other duties and projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain strong system of internal controls over financial assets
  • Responsible for monthly account reconciliation, general journal entry preparation and preparation of monthly financial statements
  • Preparation and distribution of monthly reporting for all departments
  • Responsible for preparation for the Academy's annual independent audit
  • Supervise the student billing cycle including tuition enrollment agreements, monitoring student balances and following up on delinquent accounts
  • Assist the Vice President of Finance and Administration in administering the Academy's scholarship and tuition assistance program
  • Supervise all aspects of the State of Ohio Scholarship Programs
  • Supervise finance office staff responsible for cash receipt and disbursement, purchasing and payroll cycles
  • Assist the Vice President of Finance and Administration with the annual operating budget preparation
  • Provide general support to Advancement, Guidance, College Counseling and Admissions Departments as related to student financial issues

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience
  • Certified Public Accountant or MBA preferred
  • Not-for-profit experience a plus
  • Microsoft Office proficiency required; Financial Edge proficiency a plus
