About the position

Almstead Tree and Shrub Care Co. is a second-generation, family-owned firm established in 1964, with four branch locations servicing commercial and residential clients throughout the NY, NJ, and CT tri-state area. We are currently seeking a Controller who is well-versed in the service industry and possesses the ability to see the big picture while also being hands-on with the day-to-day operations of the accounting department. This role is crucial for overseeing all aspects of general ledger accounting, including primary participation in monthly and year-end closing, budgeting, reporting, and analysis. The successful candidate must be well-organized, capable of multi-tasking, and able to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy are essential, along with strong oral and written communication skills. The Controller will need to work autonomously and collaboratively across all functional areas, including other departments and corporate entities. Dependability and good time management skills are necessary to meet deadlines efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Daily general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, commissions, and accounting for production.
  • Fixed assets and depreciation calculations.
  • Inter-company reconciliations, prepaids, accruals, interest and provision calculations.
  • Job costing for prevailing wage jobs, cost of services for our 3 service lines, equipment or supplies.
  • Preparation of state sales & use tax returns for all applicable states.
  • Monthly and annual general ledger close.
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting packages along with interim inter-company reporting as required.
  • Assistance in the preparation of budgets and ongoing maintenance of forecasts.
  • Development of new spreadsheets and reports for analysis as needs arise.
  • Oversee a staff of 3 responsible for payroll and accounts payable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of experience in hands-on full cycle accounting in a service company.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, able to multi-task and prioritize projects and assignments to meet strict deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, capable of carrying out tasks both autonomously and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications.
