About the position

The primary function of the Controller at Welty Building Co. is to maintain a robust system of internal controls that ensures all transactions are executed with the specific intent and authorization of management. This role is crucial for safeguarding the company's assets and ensuring that the financial management reporting systems accurately capture all financial data related to transactions. The Controller is responsible for providing meaningful financial reports that serve as the basis for sound management decisions. Additionally, the Controller acts as the principal source of financial information for the President, keeping them informed about the financial status of specific projects. In this capacity, the Controller also manages automated information systems, overseeing hardware and software acquisition and maintenance. The role grants the Controller the autonomy to take necessary actions to fulfill their responsibilities, provided these actions comply with existing laws, regulations, and company policies, while adhering to ethical business practices. The career path for this position leads to the Chief Financial Officer role. Key responsibilities include preparing and reviewing monthly operating results, ensuring timely closure of books, assembling accurate billings to customers, and reviewing cash and investments daily. The Controller meets with the President and Project Managers to discuss the financial status of projects, troubleshoots computer issues, supervises payroll preparation, and assists in developing presentations. They also supervise accounts receivable and payable functions, conduct staff meetings, and coordinate annual audits. The Controller is expected to maintain compliance with software license agreements and prepare various reports as required by management and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and reviews monthly operating results including Profit & Loss, Work in Progress, and Budget Variance Reports.
  • Ensures timely closure of books each month and communicates results to the President.
  • Assembles timely and accurate billings to customers.
  • Reviews cash and investments daily.
  • Meets with the President and/or Project Managers to discuss the financial status of individual projects.
  • Troubleshoots computer problems and coordinates hardware and software acquisition and maintenance.
  • Advises and assists Project Managers and other staff as needed.
  • Supervises payroll preparation and reporting.
  • Assists in the development of PowerPoint presentations.
  • Participates in quarterly Advisory Board Meetings.
  • Supervises accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.
  • Periodically checks the work of subordinates and offers guidance where warranted.
  • Assists in the annual development of the fixed overhead budget.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings or more often as needed.
  • Attends various special purpose meetings as requested.
  • Functions as the Pension and Profit Sharing Administrator.
  • Coordinates the annual audit review by the CPA firm and other audits conducted by external parties.
  • Analyzes select general ledger accounts.
  • Resolves human resource issues that may arise with subordinates.
  • Performs accounting functions for WHI, IBT, and/or other related entities.
  • Monitors and enforces compliance with computer software license agreements.
  • Prepares various reports as required by management, banks, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluates the performance of employees in accordance with Company policy.
  • Performs any other task or duty as requested or assigned by the President.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting is required.
  • Master's degree (MBA) preferred.
  • CPA or CMA certification preferred.
  • 5-10 years of overall experience in accounting.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a controller preferred.
  • Experience in the building construction industry is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and project cost accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Timberline System.
  • Knowledge of Payroll Tax regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to identify issues in financial data.
  • Negotiation and supervisory skills.

  • Experience with automated information systems management.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and assign priorities effectively.
  • Experience in developing PowerPoint presentations.
