About the position

State Technical College of Missouri is seeking a full-time Controller for the Business Office. This position is exempt and eligible for benefits, requiring a commitment of 12 months per year. The Controller will provide leadership, technical advice, and supervision to all personnel within the Business Office. This role is critical as it involves complex duties that necessitate a strong application of professional accounting knowledge and experience. The Controller will guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures, while also protecting the College's assets through the implementation of internal controls. The essential duties of the Controller include leading and supervising all Business Office staff and departments, which encompass Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Bookstore, and Dining. The Controller will oversee all accounting operations of the College, ensuring the production of periodic financial reports, maintaining an adequate system of accounting records, and developing a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk. This role also requires compliance with GASB financial reporting standards. In addition, the Controller will monitor all information and data processing systems used by the Business Office to ensure that financial information is processed accurately and in a timely manner. The position involves maintaining an accurate inventory and fixed asset list, interacting with various departments to ensure effective purchasing, budget, and inventory management practices, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements. The Controller will assist with processing monthly payroll, year-end reporting, and will play a significant role in the annual budget process and audit. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise all Business Office staff and departments including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Bookstore, and Dining.
  • Oversee all accounting operations of the College, including the production of periodic financial reports and maintenance of accounting records.
  • Establish, monitor, and enforce policies and procedures to guide financial decisions and protect assets.
  • Monitor information and data processing systems to ensure accurate and timely financial information processing.
  • Maintain an accurate College inventory/fixed asset list and tracking system.
  • Interact with academic and non-academic departments for effective purchasing, budget, and inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and timely submission of grant billings.
  • Assist with processing monthly payroll and ensure accurate year-end reporting (e.g., 1098ts, 1099s, W-2s).
  • Provide significant assistance with the annual budget process and audit.
  • Perform other related duties as needed or assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration and/or accounting.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible advanced accounting experience, including preparation of complex financial statements.
  • Current active CPA License.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate, and supervise personnel, including planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Superior communication and human relations skills, with the ability to present information effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Exceptional working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, with the ability to apply them in financial statement preparation.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and professionalism.

Nice-to-haves

  • Governmental accounting experience is preferred.
