About the position

NICTD is hiring a Controller. Working under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, this person will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of fiscal matters relating to the District and the South Shore Line. Longer-term responsibilities will evolve with the varying goals and objectives of the District and South Shore Line. The Controller's responsibilities will evolve with the varying changes within the organization. Candidates should expect that their responsibilities will change over time.

Responsibilities

  • Makes recommendations for major financial objectives and policies.
  • Maintains control of the District's inventory of assets.
  • Controls the District's financial records.
  • Prepares reports that summarize and forecast business activity and financial position in areas of income and expenses based on past, present, and expected operations.
  • Directs preparation of the annual business plan, in consultation with Chief Financial Officer.
  • Collects, interprets and summarizes the District's economic activities in dollars as specified or required by various regulations, standards, rules and laws.
  • Coordinates audits of District accounts.
  • Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Directly supervises the Staff, Accounts Payable, Utility, and Payroll Accountants.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the District's policies, labor agreements, and applicable laws.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited college or university with five to ten years of related financial accounting experience.
  • Must have a demonstrated high proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as other financial and accounting software applications.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of District operations, financial processes, procurement systems, safety requirements, engineering issues, and the District's organizational structure is preferred.
  • Experience in reading and applying technical procedures or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to monitor deadlines and take corrective/enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills with fellow employees and others.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for professional development.
  • Valid driver's license with a safe and insurable driving record.
  • Reliable transportation to and from Michigan City, Indiana.
  • Willingness to work varied shift hours, varied days off, holidays, and extended hours if necessary to respond to operational circumstances.
  • Superior record concerning safety attitude, attendance, and work performance.
  • Ability to multi-task among competing short-term priorities while maintaining a pleasant disposition.
