About the position

The Controller will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and senior leadership to integrate financial information and resources across the agency. This role is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities, ensuring that ACH has the necessary systems and procedures to safeguard assets, produce accurate financial information, and maintain compliance during audits. The Controller will manage accounting for the operating entity and its supporting entities, handle state and federal funding, and assist with philanthropic grant requests and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting department functions through supervision of the Director of Accounting.
  • Establish, train, and monitor financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and financial reporting integrity.
  • Provide financial reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze and report on accounting variances.
  • Coordinate and facilitate external audits.
  • Oversee financial aspects of grant and contract activity, both public and private.
  • Guide and support the accounting team with dynamic leadership.
  • Develop, recommend, and enforce process improvements to policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Support with all budgeting and strategic initiatives.
  • Support the CFO in evaluating technology solutions and emerging innovations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
  • Minimum ten years' experience in accounting, including at least five years of experience with nonprofit audits.
  • Experience managing government grants and contracts preferred.
  • Deep understanding of reporting and compliance requirements of the Uniform Grant Management Standards.
  • Experience performing Single Audits (OMB Circular A-133) or collaborating with auditors on complex Single Audits preferred.
  • Excellent analytical skills and proficiency with technology and accounting software.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Solid experience preparing and coordinating audit activities.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public accounting setting.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP.
