About the position

At Maverick, we are passionate about the casino business and dedicated to providing exceptional service to our guests. We are seeking a Controller who will play a pivotal role in ensuring the profitability of our operations while maintaining accurate and timely financial reporting. This position requires a strong focus on compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as adherence to our Standard Operating Procedures. The Controller will collaborate closely with our Nevada-based accounting team to safeguard the interests of our owners and investors, as well as our assets. The Controller will oversee various departments including Cage, Accounting, Warehouse, and the Drop/Count Team. This role involves budget planning and financial strategizing specifically for our gaming departments across Colorado Properties. The successful candidate will be responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and developing staff, ensuring effective communication regarding cash flow issues, and preparing monthly financial statements that include cash flow statements and management of receivables. In addition, the Controller will monitor gaming revenues and expenses, assist in creating annual budgets, and ensure compliance with all regulatory licenses and permits. The role also includes reviewing final financial statements for accuracy, analyzing financial data to assist management in achieving financial objectives, and ensuring compliance with Standard Accounting policies and internal controls. The Controller will also be responsible for the successful completion of all internal and external financial audits, coordinating with CPA firms, and preparing all necessary financial reports according to Maverick's requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, supervise and develop staff, including coaching, counseling and discipline.
  • Effectively manage and communicate cash flow related issues.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for the property, including cash flow statements, management of receivables, cash balances, control mechanisms and timely deposits of all funds.
  • Monitor gaming revenues and gaming expenses and ensure accurate recording in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Monitor and control Casino and Hotels cash flow and operating forecast.
  • Assist in creating annual budgets and monthly variance analysis.
  • Ensure compliance on all regulatory licenses and permits, leases, contracts, legal agreements, and operational taxes.
  • Review final financial statement for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze financial data and operations to assist and advise management in maintaining financial objectives.
  • Comply with Standard Accounting policies and procedures and internal controls for finance and accounting operations.
  • Review and approve gaming related balance sheet accounts.
  • Establish and audit all internal financial controls including purchasing, cash handling, disbursements, inventories, hotel assets, and master keys.
  • Complete all internal and external financial audits, coordinating with CPA firms and delivering information requested by auditors.
  • Direct or prepare all financial reports in accordance with Maverick's requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a managerial role.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience as a Casino Controller and/or Senior Accountant.
  • Maintain working knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting.
  • Proficiency in MS Office required, with strong MS Excel skills.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Dynamics/Business Central or related accounting system preferable.
  • Highly analytical with strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of general ledger posting process and experience preparing and posting journal entries.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently while managing concurrent deadlines and multiple priorities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the casino industry is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Colorado Gaming Control Board regulations and statutes.
