About the position

The Controller at the St. Louis Area Foodbank is responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities that support the organization's mission. This role involves leading daily finance operations, managing the accounting team, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP standards, and collaborating with program leaders to enhance financial support for program operations. The Controller will also assist the CFO in developing strategies to integrate various organizational systems and ensure effective program implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the Chief Financial Officer apprised of daily operations and communicate any problems or issues in a timely manner with proposed solutions.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate U.S. GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity and gather 990 information.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present accurate and timely financial information.
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and planning process.
  • Support the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee financial, project/program and grants accounting.
  • Lead Finance team and leverage strengths of the Finance team members.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Update all Accounting Policies and Procedures, as needed, but at least annually.
  • Provide strategic direction for all payroll and labor collection activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required
  • CPA preferred
  • 7 to 10 years of accounting and finance experience, ideally in a complex non-profit organization
  • Prior people management/direct supervisory experience required
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities, managing grant reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments and inventory
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel including V lookups, pivot tables, data, and quantitative analysis
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft 365, and other web-based applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytic, organizational, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize, effectively manage multiple projects concurrently, and take ownership of work
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, work extended hours during accounting close, audit periods and other critical times
