About the position

The Controller for the Government Contracting Practice at CBIZ is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing all financial operations and activities related to our client's health and welfare plans. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of financial management, including premium administration, banking arrangements, cash reconciliation, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The Controller will collaborate closely with senior management to develop and implement financial strategies that align with the goals and objectives of the practice and support our client's benefit plans. In this role, the Controller will prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial records. Conducting financial analysis to support decision-making processes is essential, as is the ability to present financial reports to senior management and stakeholders. The Controller will also be responsible for developing and managing the division's annual budget, monitoring budget performance, and providing variance analysis. Collaboration with department heads is crucial to ensure alignment with financial goals. Compliance and risk management are key components of this position. The Controller will oversee the preparation and filing of required DOL and IRS filings on behalf of client plans, ensuring compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and other relevant accounting standards. This role also involves overseeing internal and external audits, implementing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard assets, and identifying and mitigating financial risks. Operational efficiency is another critical aspect of the Controller's responsibilities. The individual will streamline financial processes and procedures to improve efficiency, implement financial systems and software upgrades, and ensure timely and accurate processing of transactions. Additionally, the Controller will supervise and mentor the finance team, conducting performance evaluations and providing professional development opportunities to foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Finally, the Controller will participate in strategic planning and business development initiatives, providing financial insights and recommendations to support growth and assisting in evaluating potential mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, and financial regulations.
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the insurance industry, particularly employee benefits is highly desirable.
