About the position

For The Children (FTC) is a mission-driven organization dedicated to creating positive, life-changing moments for children who have experienced relational trauma. We are seeking a Controller who will play a crucial role in managing our accounting tasks while providing incidental IT and Operations support. This position reports directly to the President and involves overseeing the organizational budget, refining internal controls, and supporting growth initiatives and system upgrades. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring financial accountability and integrity to the highest standards, including compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. In this role, you will manage the annual budgeting process, prepare monthly reports, and oversee banking and payment portals. You will also be tasked with managing cash flow and cash flow projections, providing timely and accurate financial reports, and conducting budget trend analysis. Additionally, you will supervise the Accounting Administrator to achieve strategic goals, including donation processing and donor customer service. The Controller will work closely with external independent auditors for annual audits and with tax professionals for the preparation and filing of annual form 990. As part of our mission, you will actively participate in a highly collaborative cross-functional team, supporting other organizational functions including Operations and IT as needed. Your role will also involve grant tracking and reporting throughout the grant cycle, as well as preparing and monitoring external agency reports such as ECFA, Charity Navigator, and GuideStar reporting. Responsibilities

  • Oversee the organizational budget, including the annual budgeting process, monthly reports, banking, payment portals, and accountability.
  • Manage cashflow and cashflow projections.
  • Maintain financial accountability integrity to the highest standards including compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Work with external independent auditor for annual audits and external tax professionals for annual form 990 preparation and filing.
  • Assist with grant tracking and reporting throughout the grant cycle.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reports and budget trend analysis.
  • Supervise Accounting Administrator to achieve strategic goals, including donation processing, receipts, and donor customer service.
  • Prepare and monitor external agency reports including ECFA, Charity Navigator, and GuideStar reporting.
  • Support other organizational functions including Operations and IT as needed, and actively participate in our mutually supportive and highly collaborative cross-functional team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years' experience in accounting and finance with experience in a nonprofit environment preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required, with a CPA license highly valued.
  • Significant expertise with accounting principles and practices including budgeting and auditing required.
  • Analytical with experience managing financial and accounting data, as well as the ability to assess processes and systems for optimization.
  • Experience managing various accounting systems.
  • Robust computer and IT skills including MS Office Suite, CRM systems, financial applications, and donor databases.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present reports and results to an oversight board.
  • Service experience with children in foster care preferred.
  • Team player comfortable in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Skilled at managing detailed and confidential financial and donor information.
  • Able to provide ongoing assessment of current systems and make recommendations for optimizing functions with new industry advances and resources.
