About the position

The Controller at American Communities is responsible for managing the accounting operations of multiple real estate properties and leading the accounting department. This role involves overseeing financial reporting, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and managing various accounting functions to support the company's mission of revitalizing apartment communities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the Accounting Department, including accounts payable, property accountants, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and other related functions.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures and implement controls to minimize risk.
  • Oversee the production of periodic financial reports ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Handle complex employee issues confidentially and fairly while demonstrating strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Manage all company credit card systems including users, payments, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end closing processes.
  • Produce annual budgets and forecast reporting.
  • Provide financial analysis focusing on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Prepare and file quarterly and annual reports for entities and ownership.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience in accounting or finance.
  • 3+ years in a leadership or management role.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word, and experience with Yardi.
