About the position

Our client is looking for an experienced Controller to join their growing company. We represent a leading contractor based in Queens, N.Y., specializing in delivering high-quality construction and development projects. For over 35 years, their commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction has resulted in being distinguished for expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. The Controller will prepare and maintain financial reports, budgets, and forecasts, as well as assist with tax preparation as needed. This position will handle all accounting tasks, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger entries. Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all financial transactions are properly recorded, filed, and reported.
  • Manage project accounting including job cost tracking, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and revenue recognition for long-term contracts.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow specific to project billing cycles and retention releases.
  • Oversee payroll processing and compliance.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
  • Support month-end and year-end close process.
  • Manage the preparation of the company's budget, including detailed project budgets and forecasts.
  • Report variances from the established budget and the reasons for those variances.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • 5+ years proven working experience as a Controller or similar position.
  • Proficiency in accounting software.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Experience with creating and interpreting financial statements.
  • Understanding of general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Some familiarity with project-based accounting, and cost management.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and handle a variety of responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the construction industry not necessary.
