About the position

The Controller is a pivotal role within the organization, responsible for overseeing all accounting functions to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as company policies and established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This position requires a collaborative approach, working closely with various departments to ensure that reconciliations, exception processing, and funding deadlines are met in a timely manner. The Controller will be accountable for establishing and monitoring internal processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, ensuring that critical duties are completed accurately and on time. In addition to overseeing accounting functions, which include loans and deposits, investment management, tax, fixed assets, accounts payable, and reconciliations, the Controller will ensure adherence to GAAP reporting standards and maintain accounting policies and procedures. This role also involves managing the preparation and filing of SEC and regulatory reports, assisting in merger and acquisition analysis, and conducting periodic risk reviews. The Controller will represent the bank to both internal and external customers, maintaining professionalism in all communications and protecting the confidentiality of customer and account information. The Controller will also play a significant role in personnel management, leading recruitment efforts in partnership with Human Resources to build a talented and diverse workforce. This includes coordinating training for new hires, monitoring team performance, conducting evaluations, and fostering an environment that encourages continuous learning and career advancement for team members. The position requires a strong commitment to compliance, risk management, and security training, ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with established regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions including loans and deposits, investment, tax, fixed assets, accounts payable, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with all GAAP reporting standards.
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
  • Manage preparation and filing for SEC and Regulatory Reporting.
  • Assist in Merger and Acquisition Analysis and Closing Processes including due diligence and integration of financial systems.
  • Report suspicious transactions or unusual occurrences to supervisor.
  • Conduct and document periodic risk reviews and run reports as needed.
  • Maintain customer confidence and protect bank operations by keeping information private and confidential.
  • Participate in ongoing skill, compliance, risk management and security training as required for the position.
  • Lead recruitment efforts and partner with Human Resources to recruit, hire, retain and develop a talented and diverse workforce.
  • Coordinate training for new hires and in conjunction with performance and developmental needs.
  • Monitor behavior and results to effectively coach and motivate team members to achieve service and sales goals.
  • Prepare and conduct scheduled performance evaluations and address performance issues.
  • Schedule employees, manage time off requests and approve weekly timecards.
  • Encourage continuous enhancement of subordinates' knowledge and competencies.

Requirements

  • College degree in accounting, finance or related field of study; CPA license preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in banking, public accounting or equivalent education and experience; 5+ years of managerial and team development experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft software applications; experience with the FISERV core system is preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry standards as they relate to GAAP Accounting and general departmental functions.
  • Exceptional organization, time management and follow-up skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with customers, bank employees and outside service providers.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and a wide range of procedures requiring sound judgement.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical computations using various business machines and/or computers.
  • Proficient typing and computer skills, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel.
