About the position

The Controller will coordinate and participate in the design, testing, implementation, and review of complex manual and automated financial and accounting systems and processes. This role is crucial in ensuring complete and systematic accounting records of receipts and disbursements within the organization. The Controller will perform complex clerical and bookkeeping tasks while applying accepted procedures in preparing and maintaining accounting records. This position requires a strong understanding of financial operations and the ability to lead a team effectively. In this role, the Controller will oversee and manage the accounting operations, including the work of accounting and systems analysts, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of financial systems. The Controller will conduct performance evaluations for accounting staff and support their professional development. Additionally, the Controller will review and improve financial processes, systems, and procedures to ensure compliance with accounting principles and auditing standards. The Controller will prepare and analyze financial documents, including business reports, forecasts, and statements, to provide insights into the organization's financial health. This includes supervising the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts by the accounting team, monitoring financial performance, and identifying opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements. The role also involves reviewing and reconciling financial statements and accounts on a monthly basis, managing fixed asset accounting, and ensuring compliance with annual reporting requirements. Furthermore, the Controller will lead the preparation of departmental budgets, provide ongoing analysis of budget performance, prepare and post routine and complex journal entries, and lead audit preparations. The Controller will maintain the organization's financial compliance with legal requirements and standards, analyze proposals for financial accounting policies and systems, and recommend and implement improvements. This position will also oversee the maintenance and enhancement of accounting information systems and present comprehensive financial evaluations, proposals, and recommendations to executive leadership and stakeholders. Lastly, the Controller will develop and maintain technical documentation and user manuals for accounting systems and perform additional duties as assigned to support the organization's financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the accounting operations, including the work of accounting and systems analysts, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of financial systems.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for accounting staff and support their professional development.
  • Review and improve financial processes, systems, and procedures to ensure compliance with accounting principles and auditing standards.
  • Prepare and analyze financial documents, including business reports, forecasts, and statements, to provide insights into the organization's financial health.
  • Supervise the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts by the accounting team.

  • Lead audit preparations and compile necessary documentation to facilitate the audit process.
  • Maintain the organization's financial compliance with legal requirements and standards.
  • Analyze proposals for financial accounting policies and systems, recommending and implementing improvements.
  • Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of accounting information systems.
  • Present comprehensive financial evaluations, proposals, and recommendations to executive leadership and stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and user manuals for accounting systems.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the organization's financial operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Five years of professional experience as an accountant, auditor, or computer programmer analyst OR valid Certified Public Accountant certificate with at least three years of professional experience as an accountant, auditor, or computer programmer analyst.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices, standards, principles, and methods related to sound financial operations of for-profit and nonprofit organizations as evidenced by achieving standard professional accreditation or certification.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and requirements related to financial operations and management.
  • Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, compile, and report complex statistical and financial data.
  • Knowledge of the organization's programs and services.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
