About the position

The Controller is a pivotal member of the Finance Leadership Team at The Granite Group, responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This role encompasses overseeing various accounting functions, including accounts payable and consolidation operations, while maintaining a robust internal controls environment. As the company grows, both organically and through potential acquisitions, the Controller's responsibilities will expand, necessitating continuous innovation and evolution of business policies and procedures. The Controller will also play a crucial role in developing team talent to support the company's sustainable growth. In this dynamic position, the Controller will leverage their accounting expertise and operational excellence, particularly in month-end close processes, to drive success. Key responsibilities include managing the month-end close and financial reporting processes, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and leading a team of accountants to perform accurate monthly reconciliations. The Controller will prepare financial statements for both internal and external reporting, coordinate with external auditors, and oversee timely regulatory reporting, including tax compliance. Additionally, the Controller will manage daily cash operations, maintain financial forecasts, and partner with various departments to analyze financial performance. The role also involves maintaining the general ledger and financial reports within the ERP system, resolving system-related financial transaction issues, and supporting branch operations. People management is a critical aspect of this role, as the Controller will be responsible for hiring, training, and developing a team of accounting professionals. Furthermore, the Controller will lead integration efforts following acquisitions and continuously seek ways to improve accounting operations, including automation and evaluating internal controls. This position requires a proactive, results-oriented individual with strong analytical skills and the ability to foster effective working relationships across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the month-end close and financial reporting processes.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
  • Perform month-end/quarter-end close activities in 6 business days and year-end close in 10 business days.
  • Manage the consolidation of all financial data to ensure accurate accounting of business results.
  • Research accounting issues to ensure compliance with GAAP.
  • Manage a team of Accountants to ensure proper monthly account reconciliations.
  • Analyze and report financial variances.
  • Prepare financial statements for internal and external reporting, including variance explanations.
  • Coordinate activities of external auditors to deliver annual audited financial statements.
  • Oversee timely regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance.
  • Perform timely balance sheet reviews with a team of Accountants.
  • Stay updated on the latest FASB developments and adopt new standards as appropriate.
  • Manage daily cash operations and ensure proper cash reconciliations are performed.
  • Maintain and update daily financial forecasts.
  • Review and analyze all branch financials and partner with branches as their financial advisor.
  • Assist with the company's forecast and budget planning processes as needed.
  • Provide ad hoc assistance, analysis, and reporting as requested by the Executive Team.
  • Maintain general ledger accounts and financial reports in the ERP system.
  • Maintain vendor master database and resolve system-related financial transaction issues.
  • Hire, train, develop, and retain a team of Accounting and Accounts Payable members.
  • Lead integration efforts following acquisitions and continuously improve accounting policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with month-end close activities and year-end audit operations.
  • Previous experience as a Controller is a must.
