The Controller plays a crucial role in directing financial activities, including planning, procurement, and investments for the organization. This position involves maintaining and analyzing financial statements, controls, budgets, and ensuring tax compliance. The Controller will manage the company's financial matters, develop long-term strategies, and provide comprehensive financial reports. This includes implementing accounting controls and procedures to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all financial and management information. The Controller will also oversee cost control systems, interpret cost trends, and develop analyses to identify issues. Setting and monitoring accurate budgets for projects, submitting tax returns, and training project managers on earned value management are also key responsibilities. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure sufficient funds are available for ongoing operations and capital investments, as well as advising management on insurance coverage and overseeing audits of the company's accounts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage company financial matters and develop long-term strategies.
  • Provide financial reports and implement accounting controls and procedures.
  • Ensure soundness, timeliness, and accuracy of all financial and management information.
  • Develop tools to measure and track department, construction crew, and project performance.
  • Oversee cost control systems and interpret cost trends to identify issues.
  • Set and monitor accurate company and project budgets, including earned value and forecasts.
  • Submit monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns and reports.
  • Train project managers on managing earned value.
  • Ensure sufficient funds are available for ongoing operations and capital investments.
  • Define and maintain the chart of accounts and reconcile all accounts to prepare monthly reports.
  • Advise management on insurance coverage for property losses and potential liabilities.
  • Oversee the design of the Finance Department's organizational structure.
  • Arrange for audits of the company's accounts and determine depreciation rates for capitalized items.
  • Oversee the flow of cash and financial instruments, and arrange for equity and debt financing.
  • Process accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions timely and accurately.
  • Review contracts and assist in administrative duties as needed.
  • Partner with Human Resources to hire, develop, motivate, and review subordinates for effective office operations.
  • Create and measure KPIs and perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in construction finance, accounting, economics, or a related degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of taxes, capital purchase analysis, trend analysis, operations research, cost control, and budgeting.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is required.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Job Boss, Lucid charts, and Encore is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's in Business Administration (MBA) degree in construction with a financial discipline.
  • CPA, CCIFP certification, or similar training.
  • CFMA membership or similar construction industry participation.
