About the position

QARI (Quincy Asian Resources, Inc.) is a not-for-profit social service organization dedicated to enhancing the social, cultural, economic, and civic lives of immigrants and their families. The organization provides a range of culturally competent services, including workforce development, adult education programs, youth development, health access programs, and cultural events, as well as information and referrals to public or community partners. A sister agency, Wutabon, Inc., was established in 2021 to focus specifically on workforce development, offering personal and professional growth opportunities for immigrant workforces through various employment pathways and wraparound social services. QARI/Wutabon is committed to being a leader in providing social solutions to immigrants and is focused on innovative ways to connect with the community. The Controller position is a critical role within QARI, responsible for the day-to-day finance and administrative management of the organization. This includes compliance, contracts management, and oversight of administration and strategic planning. The Controller will lead and administer the finance and development efforts to support the organization's growth, which includes managing an increasing annual budget. This position will work closely with the CEO/CPO and the Board Finance & Administration Committee to enhance the financial outlook of the organization. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong managerial, financial, and analytical skills, along with a commitment to financial integrity and a strong work ethic. Not-for-profit experience is required for this role. Key responsibilities include optimizing financial processes tailored to not-for-profit entities, preparing GAAP-compliant financial statements, leading the closing process, analyzing balance sheets and income statements, monitoring financial performance, managing the annual budgeting process, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing banking and insurance relationships, implementing cash management practices, and fostering cross-functional collaboration with other departments. The Controller will play a vital role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of QARI, contributing to its mission of serving the immigrant community.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the implementation of financial processes and procedures tailored to a not-for-profit entity, emphasizing compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements, ensuring transparency and adherence to industry standards.
  • Lead the closing process to meet critical deadlines, guaranteeing timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Review and analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Continuously monitor financial performance using key performance indicators and initiate corrective actions as necessary.
  • Assess existing accounting operations and recommend process improvements that align with not-for-profit industry practices.
  • Manage the annual budgeting process, aligning financial planning with organizational priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements pertinent to the not-for-profit sector.
  • Oversee banking and insurance relationships and collaborate with external accounting firms.
  • Implement sound cash management practices and develop accurate cash forecasting models.
  • Foster effective collaboration with other departments to integrate financial strategies with operational functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or business; CPA is a plus.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible financial accounting and managerial experience, specifically in not-for-profit organizations.
  • Ability to research, read, analyze, and interpret technical accounting pronouncements and federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Experience with not-for-profit tax reporting preferred.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to convey complex financial information in accessible terms for leadership and board members.
  • Mission-driven and committed to working with a multilingual and multicultural community.
