About the position

Meals on Wheels San Francisco (MOWSF) is dedicated to providing a network of services that enable seniors to live in their homes with dignity and independence for as long as possible. The Controller will play a crucial role in overseeing all accounting operations within the organization, ensuring that financial data is accurate and compliant with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This position is responsible for managing the organization's financial reporting, including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger activities. The Controller will also supervise payroll functions, ensuring the accuracy of payroll processing and compliance with tax regulations. In addition to overseeing daily accounting operations, the Controller will develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard the integrity of financial data. This includes reviewing and reconciling all entries to the general ledger, preparing timely financial statements, and managing bank and financial matters. The Controller will also oversee the annual audit process, ensuring that all financial reporting packages are prepared accurately and in a timely manner. Furthermore, the role involves managing grant financial aspects, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and providing financial data for meal reimbursement agreements with various entities. The Controller will work closely with program managers to track grant expenditures and ensure proper allocation of funds. This position requires excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Supervise the organization's payroll function, verifying the accuracy of payroll and ensuring proper filing of payroll tax returns.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Review and reconcile all entries to the general ledger and post journal entries as needed.
  • Manage all bank/financial matters and review bank statement reconciliations monthly.
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee the annual audit process including preparation of annual financial reporting package.
  • Ensure timely filing of year-end tax returns and other regulatory filings.
  • Oversee the financial aspects of grant management, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and accurate reporting.
  • Work closely with program managers to track grant expenditures and ensure proper allocation of funds.
  • Timely invoice City, County and other entity agreements for meal reimbursement based on contracts.
  • Maintain all service/vendor and equipment contracts.
  • Responsible for expense allocations and preparing cost accounting analysis for meals delivered.
  • Assist CFO with financial presentations for staff and the Board of Directors.
  • Provide direct supervision to accounting staff; conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.

Requirements

  • 5 years of management experience in accounting or finance.
  • Experience in nonprofit organizations with at least $15 million in revenue and federal funding levels requiring A-133 audit.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and integrity.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and respond to daily challenges.
  • Proven ability to interact with diverse teams and stakeholders.
