About the position

The Controller at REFORM Alliance will be responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting functions within the organization. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit regulations while managing a small finance team. The Controller will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will play a key role in financial oversight, governance, compliance, team leadership, and process improvement, all aimed at supporting the organization's mission to reform the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of financial reporting, budgeting, general ledger, and cash flow management for the organization.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit regulations.
  • Monitor and analyze financial performance, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets and financial plans in collaboration with departmental leaders.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce internal controls and governance frameworks.
  • Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements, including tax filings and audits.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate financial risks.
  • Maintain documentation and compliance records for financial transactions and processes.
  • Collaborate with external auditors and regulatory agencies during audits and reviews.
  • Supervise and mentor a small team of finance professionals and contractors, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for the finance team.
  • Identify and implement streamlined financial processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the leadership team and key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the COO and other leaders to align financial strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Engage with staff and stakeholders to educate them on financial processes and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, degree in Accounting preferred
  • 6-10 years of accounting experience within the nonprofit space or public accounting within nonprofit organizations
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Professional and resourceful style with ability to work both independently and as a team
  • Ability to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
  • Flexible personality to adapt to changing environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficiency in NetSuite, Slack, Navan, Brex, G-suite, Asana and Salesforce
  • Ability to both be a coach and a player as you navigate the details and the 30,000 foot view of accounting and finance
