The Controller is responsible for the timely production of financial statements and related supplementary information in conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This role includes coordinating the annual single audit, and other financial statement, regulatory, grant and contract report submissions, audits, and reviews. The Controller is also responsible for the timely production and submission of grants and contract claims, invoices, and draws. Additionally, the Controller oversees all functions related to month-end and year-end general ledger account entries, adjustments, and reconciliations. The Controller will maintain the daily operations of the general ledger, sub-ledgers, supporting schedules, and related documentation, while designing, implementing, monitoring, overseeing, and performing accounting functions. This position ensures that financial controls and accounting processes are effective and efficient. The Controller will also select, onboard, train, coach, and develop accounting and finance staff, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to meet the organization's financial needs.

Responsibilities

  • Timely production of financial statements and supplementary information in accordance with GAAP.
  • Coordinate the annual single audit and other financial statement submissions.
  • Timely production and submission of grants and contract claims, invoices, and draws.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end general ledger account entries, adjustments, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain daily operations of the general ledger and supporting documentation.
  • Design, implement, monitor, and oversee accounting functions.
  • Ensure effective financial controls and accounting processes.
  • Select, onboard, train, coach, and develop accounting and finance staff.
  • Analyze and authorize cash receipts and transfers according to policy.
  • Analyze and authorize expenditures and disbursements according to policy.
  • Develop and maintain banking, merchant card, and purchasing card accounts.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of cash, investment, receivables, capital, payables, and liabilities account schedules.
  • Prepare detailed financial statements, reports, and supplementary information.
  • Work with department leaders to accumulate, analyze, report, and submit data for internal and external reporting.
  • Serve as the primary contact for financial audits and reviews, coordinating documentation for external auditors.
  • Coordinate and monitor continuous improvement activities related to essential functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • Five years of professional level accounting experience with essential functions.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of governmental and grant reporting requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain fiscal records and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive financial reports.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to inspire, lead, and develop staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA candidate preferred.
