About the position

As the Controller at Relay Fire and Safety, you will oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting. This role involves providing financial insights and strategic guidance to senior management, particularly in a fast-paced environment that is undergoing growth through acquisitions. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background, leadership skills, and familiarity with Percentage Completion accounting to effectively integrate newly acquired companies.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting (including GL, AP, AR, Payroll), ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to relevant accounting principles and standards.
  • Oversee month end closing process and preparation of financial statements adhering to deadlines.
  • Provide ongoing insight into the financial results to assist with business growth through monthly/quarterly analysis of key metrics (Revenue, Expense, Margin, Hiring, etc).
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and mitigate financial risks.
  • Coordinate and oversee tax planning and compliance activities, including income tax filings, sales tax, and other regulatory filings.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and coordinate annual financial audits and reviews.
  • Determine accounting treatment and financial implications of complex transactions (IE: purchase accounting) with the CFO and outside accounting firm.
  • Oversee the implementation and optimization of financial systems and processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Build up accounting team, and provide leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities.
  • Coordinate with deal teams on closing of new investments and realizations.
  • Partner closely with Finance and Operations teams to provide transparency for operations performance reporting.

Requirements

  • Minimum 8-10+ years of accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller or related position.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA certification, preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Strong technical accounting acumen and well-versed in revenue recognition principles (ASC 606, ASC 842, GAAP).
  • Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems (e.g., Sage Intacct).
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Leadership experience and the ability to motivate and develop a team.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with smaller privately owned companies would be a plus particularly if this person has helped analyze and upgrade their accounting processes.
  • Preferred candidates will have worked in life safety or construction industries.
