As a Controls Application Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in collaborating with Product Management and Engineering Development teams to deliver new HVAC Controls products that meet customer and business needs. This position is integral to the product development process, where you will influence design details and ensure the successful commercialization of our controls products. Your work will directly impact customer experiences, technician effectiveness, and sustainable business practices, making you a key player in our mission to create efficient and sustainable environments. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert and primary decision maker throughout the full development life cycle of controls projects. You will advocate for customer and business needs while resolving technical, schedule, resource, and business constraints. Your responsibilities will include compiling and analyzing customer and business needs in collaboration with Product Management teams, conducting voice of customer activities, and authoring product requirements. You will also work closely with engineering teams to develop product designs and support product acceptance testing to ensure that user needs are met. Additionally, you will manage field trial testing to validate product performance in real-world environments and support the development of training materials and user literature. Your role will involve presenting product value propositions to customers and teaching technical audiences about controls products. This position is hybrid, requiring you to work onsite three days a week, allowing for a balance between collaboration and independent work.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert and primary decision maker for controls projects throughout the development life cycle.
  • Compile and analyze customer and business needs with Product Management teams based on market research and competitive analysis.
  • Conduct voice of customer activities to identify user and business needs.
  • Collaborate on product roadmaps and strategy with product management teams.
  • Author product requirements and build understanding with product engineering and validation teams.
  • Author and review engineering documentation including System Requirements Documents and Test Plans.
  • Collaborate with User Experience teams to develop user scenarios and usability tests.
  • Support product acceptance testing to ensure product requirements are satisfied.
  • Manage field trial testing to validate product performance in varied systems.
  • Support development of training modules and user literature.
  • Present product value propositions during customer visits.
  • Teach technical audiences about controls products during training sessions.
  • Travel independently or in small teams to support sales offices and customers, up to 10-15%.

Requirements

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in HVAC, Engineering, or related field is required.
  • At least 7 years of experience with Trane HVAC and/or controls is required if no degree is held.
  • 3 years of experience in HVAC, Controls, or related building technologies is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of controls products and systems is preferred.
  • New product development experience in hardware or software is preferred.
