About the position

The Controls Engineer III at QED Technologies is responsible for directing and coordinating electrical and controls engineering activities related to new product platforms. This role involves designing, building, and debugging control systems for CNC machines and related equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and managing cross-functional engineering projects. The engineer will also support service functions and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Write controls requirements and specifications for external product development.
  • Communicate requirements clearly to suppliers and develop validation plans.
  • Maintain knowledge of CE and NEC code requirements to ensure compliance in machine designs.
  • Create control diagrams to illustrate inter-relationships between control systems.
  • Define electrical interface specifications and work with System Design Engineers on motor selection.
  • Create or modify PLC code to solve problems or achieve new functionality.
  • Identify electrical and controls related spare parts and support user manual development.
  • Direct electrical engineering activities for testing and calibration of instruments and control devices.
  • Manage cross-functional engineering projects, including project goals and budgets.
  • Develop procedures for service personnel to perform upgrades and troubleshoot machines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of related experience in engineering or machine controls environment.
  • At least 2 years of management or project management experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and regulations.
  • Proficient in writing reports and business correspondence.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including probability and statistics.
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
  • Knowledge of design, development, project management, and spreadsheet software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with design of experiments.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, DVMs, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Ability to read and write PLC and CNC code.
