About the position

The Controls Engineer at Ford Motor Company plays a crucial role in the Manufacturing team, focusing on enhancing the performance of tooling, equipment, and conveyor systems. This position involves problem-solving, coordinating resources, and implementing new technologies to improve efficiency and quality in the production of smart vehicles. The engineer will also be responsible for training personnel and ensuring safety standards are met in the manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead problem solving to assist plants and implementation teams in resolving tooling, equipment and conveyor performance issues and downtime.
  • Coordinate resources to find root cause and fixes, manage and breakdown problems into items that can be validated.
  • Handle setup and maintenance of industrial bar code printers.
  • Utilize sound knowledge design and implement vision control systems, familiar with different types of vision cameras and their programming software.
  • Continuously evaluate equipment for improvement for quality and delivery.
  • Use FIS plant monitoring software to review cycle times of equipment, review and follow up project installations.
  • Reprogram equipment for engineering changes and improvements.
  • Update program backups for machinery and automation.
  • Program new installations of automation, machinery, material handling, and robots.
  • Review risk assessments and evaluate equipment safety as part of a team.
  • Assist in training manufacturing personnel and plant electricians.
  • Read and modify electrical prints and schematics, AutoCAD.
  • Maintain familiarity with OA, CPN/MPN networks and communication protocols for connecting to wireless and wired networks.
  • Manage installation and maintenance of virus protection software for controls network PCs, perform PC backup disc images and installation of communication and firmware and controls software.
  • Work overtime and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 or more years of Controls Engineering experience (internship and coop experience will be considered).

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Electrical background (electrician or technician) preferred
  • Familiar with PLC/CNC (Siemens/ Allen-Bradley), VFD, Servo, Profinet, ABB and FANUC Robots
  • Solid understanding of laser burning
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, modify electrical schematics and use AutoCAD
  • Validated ability to troubleshoot equipment and continuously evaluate for process improvements
  • Experience with conveyor system programming and overhead Gantry
  • Solid understanding of networking to include DH+, Ethernet and remote IO
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience
  • Lean Tools - 5S, Kanban, Poka-Yoke, Value Stream Mapping experience
  • Understanding of 8D, FMEA, and DMAIC processes
  • Familiar with TQM and Kaizen methods
  • One or more years of experience with MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook)
  • Knowledge of simulation modeling and visual factory management preferred.
