About the position

The Controls System Development Engineer at AWS is responsible for the design, programming, and implementation of automation systems for data center controls. This role involves collaborating with a diverse team to ensure the operational excellence of AWS's global infrastructure, focusing on low voltage switchgear and generator automation. The engineer will leverage their expertise in PLC programming and system development to enhance the efficiency and reliability of AWS data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in low voltage switchgear breaker control and generator automation.
  • Develop, program, and iterate sequence of operations and HMI graphics leveraging PLC/PAC/IPC platforms for automation projects.
  • Contribute to and maintain a library of standard tested automation logic function blocks.
  • Utilize IEC61131-3 programming language standards including ladder logic, structured text, function block, and sequential function chart.
  • Develop automation sequences, mechanical plant strategies, and complex environmental and electrical concepts.
  • Understand data center redundancy, electrical failure strategies, and energy conservation best practices.
  • Lead collaboration across multiple teams to accomplish initiative goals on time.
  • Create and maintain specification documents for global automation projects.
  • Manage vendor selection, bid review, and RFI support.
  • Act as the central point of contact for electrical controls standards and manage requests for information.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • 1+ years of designing or architecting new and existing systems experience.
  • 3+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems, and hands-on systems engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, or Ruby.
  • 3 years of experience in PLC development leveraging IEC-61131 Structured Text and Ladder Logic.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with PowerShell, Python, Ruby, or Java.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment using the Scrum methodology.
  • 3 years of Data Center Design, Commissioning, or Construction Experience.
