About the position

The Cooperative Education Auto Body Student Technician position at Frederick County Public Schools is designed for high school students enrolled in the Auto Body Career Technical Education Program. This role provides a paid career-preparation work-based learning opportunity that aligns with a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course. Students will receive supervised on-the-job instruction, allowing them to apply academic and workplace skills in a real-world setting. The program is particularly aimed at high school juniors and seniors, providing them with valuable experience in the automotive field while they continue their education. In this position, students will perform basic painting and refinishing techniques, which include surface preparation, operation of spray guns and related equipment, paint mixing, matching, and applying, as well as final vehicle detailing. The role emphasizes the importance of safety and proper procedures in the workplace, ensuring that students learn to identify and follow safe working practices. Students will also be expected to read and interpret customary and metric measuring systems, solve problems involving volume and ratios, and work collaboratively as part of a team. The essential duties of the position are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in various aspects of auto body repair. This includes demonstrating the safe use and maintenance of auto body hand tools and air tools, identifying the basic construction of automobiles, diagnosing and analyzing damage, and exhibiting knowledge in the use of collision manuals. Students will also learn to write accurate work orders, operate GMAW (wire feed) welders, oxyacetylene torches, and plasma cutters, as well as perform basic dent repairs and mix and apply body enhancing putties. The program aims to equip students with the skills necessary for a successful career in the automotive industry, fostering both technical abilities and professional communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic painting and refinishing techniques including surface preparation and paint application.
  • Operate spray guns and related equipment for vehicle refinishing.
  • Mix and match paint colors for vehicle repairs.
  • Detail vehicles to ensure a high-quality finish.
  • Identify and follow safe working procedures in the auto body shop.
  • Read and interpret customary and metric measuring systems for accurate work.
  • Solve problems involving volume and ratios related to auto body work.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member in the shop environment.
  • Write accurate work orders for services performed.
  • Demonstrate safe use and maintenance of auto body hand tools and air tools.
  • Identify the basic construction of automobiles and diagnose damage.
  • Exhibit knowledge in the use of collision manuals and writing damage reports.
  • Identify and operate GMAW (wire feed) welders, oxyacetylene torches, and plasma cutters.
  • Remove and replace cosmetic panels on vehicles.
  • Perform basic dent repair techniques.
  • Mix and apply body enhancing putties for repairs.
  • Cosmetically and structurally repair composite materials.

Requirements

  • Current high school student participating in the Auto Body Career Technical Education Program.
  • Basic reading, writing, and computation skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well in a team environment.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Knowledge of school procedures and policies.
