About the position

The Richmond Times-Dispatch is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented copy editor to join our team. The ideal candidate is not only a news and culture enthusiast but also possesses a keen understanding of local politics, foreign affairs, and current trends. As a copy editor, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of our news, business, and feature stories, and potentially sports content as well. Your strong news judgment and attention to detail will be essential in identifying issues within stories and collaborating with writers to find effective solutions. In this fast-paced environment, you will be expected to balance multiple assignments and priorities while adhering to tight deadlines. In addition to editing, you will be responsible for crafting engaging, keyword-rich headlines and cutlines that enhance the stories. You will also pull wire stories and prepare them for publication, ensuring that Richmond.com remains up-to-date through our content management system. This position requires a flexible schedule, including the possibility of working nights and weekends, to meet the demands of our dynamic newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Edit news, business, and feature stories, and possibly sports.
  • Use strong news judgment and attention to detail to identify problems in stories and collaboratively work toward solutions.
  • Balance multiple assignments and priorities on deadline.
  • Write engaging, keyword-filled headlines and cutlines that complement stories.
  • Uphold standards in a fast-paced environment.
  • Pull wire stories and prepare them for publication.
  • Help keep Richmond.com up to date through our content management system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or related discipline.
  • Two years of experience at a daily newspaper.
  • Strong communication skills with excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work with desk colleagues and newsroom departments in a professional manner.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that includes nights and weekends.
