About the position

The Copy Editor/Writer position at the State of Ohio involves proofreading and editing written content for accuracy and adherence to style guidelines. The role requires a strong understanding of grammar and punctuation, as well as the ability to create and edit original copy that meets the needs of both internal and external audiences. The position is under the direction of the Director of Communications and includes responsibilities such as fact-checking, content creation, and ensuring that all written materials align with the company's brand voice.

Responsibilities

  • Proofread and edit copy for grammar, punctuation, and adherence to style guides.
  • Fact-check content, including verifying numerical information and statistics.
  • Create and edit original copy that meets client and company needs.
  • Conduct research to support writing and formulate ideas.
  • Maintain adherence to style guides and improve readability and concision of copy.
  • Edit and proofread internal and external communications for accuracy and clarity.
  • Assist with content creation as necessary and submit significant changes to authors or managers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a copy editor or in a related position.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong understanding of grammar rules and conventions.
  • Experience with digital or print media (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Oxford and AP style guides.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional research, writing, and analytical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.
